For your final exam, you will be required to create a webservice. The purpose of this webservice is to insert a product into the South Breeze Groceries database, which you already use. The web service must return a value of 1 if the record was inserted correctly, or -1 if there were any other issues.
Details of this exercise are below:
1. Create a webservice file at the location: Asppub/SouthBreezeGroceries/WebServices, and name it wsvInsertProducts.asmx 2. The webservice should take the following inputs (in that order) and insert them into the Products table of the SouthBreezeGroceries database. Ignore the Discontinued field. • ProductName • QuantityPerUnit • UnitPrice 3. ProductID is a primary key in the Products table will not need to be one of the fields you insert into the database because it is auto-generated. 4. Use a variable like InsertChecker in your assignments. As suggested above, return an 1 or -1. 5. We recommend that you use a Try-Catch block. 6. Be sure to references the appropriate names spaces and classes you will be using for web- and data services. 7. Run your webservice locally. You should see input boxes for your variables. Verify that the products were actually inserted using the Products.aspx webpage you made in Unit 3.
Submisison 8. In the ISMS dropbox for the final exam, copy paste the fully qualified URLs for a. the webservice you just created b. for your Products page c. Add a commentary on what is happening, especially if the page is not functioning as it should. Your understanding of the situation in this commentary will be used to award grace points in the case your web service malfunctions.
I really don't have any strong ideas. Looking at the Pubs database, the tables have fields and datatypes that would be confusing (such as tinyint). If we told them to insert into specific fields, forgetting about the others, then we would have to alter the database to allow nulls, etc.
The only thing I could think of using the Pubs database that was different from Bree's idea is to have create a webservice to insert fname, lname, and hiredate (datetime) into the database.
If we have to alter the database, then we might as well create an simpler database with exactly what we want.
I thought the hands-on final LITE spring quarter was along the right path...where the students were creating and consuming a webservice that inserted details about a car.
We could change it up and have students create and consume a webservice that inserts their personal info (fname, lname, date of birth, age, and email address) into a database for a contest.
I used the Northwind database and had them insert a product into it. We could have them insert product name, quantity, price and discontinued into it. I made a webservice, consumed it, then had a gridview display the new product.
